About
It was the one question, the answer to which we had practiced over and over again. It was the one question, the professors told us, most interviewers were certain to ask. It was a question I didn't quite like."Tell us something about yourself."
I never found it easy to talk about myself. It hasn't gotten better with time either, which is why I have neglected updating this page.
But when the blog I started just for a lark has managed to survive for 3 years now, it is time to say a little something about myself.
Exactly when I turned into the person I never dreamt I would, I really don't know. You see, there was a time when I used to scoff at cooking - in the circle of friends I moved around with, it was almost "the" thing to do! Take aways, cooks to come home and prepare our meals, ready to eat meals were some of the things I swore by.Cooking and me? Perish the thought, I'd say.
But somewhere down the line, I fell in love with cooking. Somewhere along the way, I started obsessing about cooking.
So what kind of food do I cook? Yes, low fat. Yes, made with the freshest and choicest ingredients that I can afford to buy. Yes, healthy and wholesome. Yawn....sounds quite clichéd, doesn't it? Well, while all of that is true, there is more....
I had been exposed to different styles of cooking even as a child. Family members and neighbours from different parts of the country influenced the food my mom cooked in our Maharashtrian household. Getting married into a Tamil family that had spent many years in the eastern part of India further enriched my knowledge about the astounding variety there is in Indian cooking.
Over the last 10 years, I have been fortunate to have lived in Dubai, Singapore and now, in Johannesburg. Every country I have lived in, every culture I have seen has added to my culinary repertoire. Living in two continents and four countries has meant that I am equally at ease whipping up Thai curries as I am at blending Indian masalas. It has taught me to braai, stir fry, simmer and steam.
Inspired by all these influences and experiences, sometimes authentic, sometimes a fusion of different styles, now that's the kind of food I cook.
So come on in, step into my kitchen. I hope you like what I cook there!
